Past

Reflecting History

Thangka painting, a sacred Himalayan Buddhist art form, traces its origins back over 3,000 years, emerging from ancient Indian and Central Asian artistic traditions before evolving in Tibet around the 7th century CE. Deeply rooted in Vajrayana Buddhism, Thangka paintings were originally used as teaching tools, spiritual aids, and meditative icons, often depicting deities, mandalas, or scenes from the life of the Buddha. These intricate scroll paintings—crafted on cotton or silk using mineral pigments and gold—have preserved not only religious symbolism but also detailed cosmologies, lineages, and philosophies central to Tibetan culture. Passed down through generations of highly trained artists, the tradition remains alive today, revered both as a spiritual practice and as an extraordinary example of classical Himalayan art.
